Ina May Gaskin on the Medicalization of Birth

Internationally known natural birth advocate, author, and practicing
certified professional midwife, Ina May Gaskin is often the go-to
authority on birth matters. In 1970, she and her husband, Stephen,
founded The Farm, an intentional cooperative community in
Tennessee, where she continues to teach and practice at The Farm
Midwifery Center.

Her first book, “Spiritual Midwifery,” has inspired women the
world ‘round to not only birth in the most natural way possible,
but also to become midwives and doulas themselves. Her most
recent book, “Birth Matters: A Midwife’s Manifesta,” explores the
dramatic increase in c-sections in the U.S. An interview with The Sun
Magazine in early 2012 has her discussing the nearly 34% caesarean
rate in this country, and the impact on maternal care and mortality.
